  Telerobotics (TR) is a word you've probably heard before but it may not provide a clear meaning
  in your head. The problem isn't in the brain itself, it's the fact that the word is
  often misused in the mainstream media and by people who aren't technical experts.
  While "telerobotics" and "telepresence" are frequently
  used interchangeably (they are closely related concepts), the differences are important to know.
  
  In this first article, we are going to clear
  up some of the misconceptions and get a look at what,
  exactly, these two things really are before we wade into the ways in which these will affect the security/surveillance markets.
  Telerobotics is often confused with the concept of"telepresence (TP). Both have a role influence the way that future security systems will perform. What is the difference between telepresence and Telerobotics? Telepresence makes you feel like you're located in a remote location, but without actually being in a remote location. Telerobotics takes the concept of the realm of telepresence to a higher level. If you consider TP to be a remote set of eye and ears, then TR is eyes with ears, hands and feet. It lets you not just hear the location and see it via two-way audio, but to interact physically with objects located in the remote location , and also to move the TR hardware around the remote space. This ability could drastically alter the way security and surveillance are done. Telerobotics could be programmed to open doors, physically interact with people , or even set off an alarm for fire if the situation calls for it. It can also be used to greet guests to the facility or any of an array of tasks that normally require a human being to be present in a particular location. There is no need to be locked in to the focal points of a set of cameras, and wondering what is happening just out of view. When using TR, an operator can navigate the hardware anyplace in the facility and get exact views on any given location, without the requirement of a bank of cameras. The physical limits of these systems will be similar to those of other 'remote' technologies. Bandwidth between controller and TR configuration, the need to keep the remote's software and hardware and the considerations related to getting an TR setup back in operation should it encounter a significant problem while remote are all factors that will impact anyone using TR to secure their home.
